La Digue

Bicycles, boulders and Anse Source d’Argent

La Digue is the smallest of the Seychelles’ three main inhabited islands and the one that has changed least. Most people get around by bicycle; there are a few vehicles but no airport, and the main village, La Passe, is where the ferry from Praslin arrives after a crossing of about fifteen minutes.

The island’s most famous sight is Anse Source d’Argent, a beach of shallow lagoon water and wind-sculpted pink granite boulders inside L’Union Estate, a former coconut plantation with an old copra mill, a planter’s house, a family cemetery and a pen of giant tortoises. There is an entrance fee to the estate. The east-coast beaches — Grand Anse, Petite Anse and Anse Cocos — are wilder and more dramatic.

What to see and do: La Digue

Cycle to Anse Source d’Argent

Hire a bike at La Passe and ride south through L’Union Estate to the beach. Low tide leaves the lagoon very shallow; mid to high tide is better for swimming.

Ride to the east-coast beaches

Grand Anse is a big, beautiful beach with strong waves at times; from there paths lead to Petite Anse and Anse Cocos. Swimming can be dangerous on this side when the surf is up.

Hike to Anse Marron

The wild southern coast can only be reached on foot, over rocks and through the forest. Go with a guide — see the Anse Marron hike.

Join a boat trip to Curieuse or the outer islets

Catamaran trips from La Digue visit Coco Island, the Sisters and Félicité, and some go to Curieuse and St Pierre.
